Pelvic Organ Prolapse Advice

Medical and Legal Advice following POP recall.

If you have received a letter from Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospital NHS Trust asking you to make an appointment to discuss the treatment you have received from Dr Arunkalaivanan for pelvic organ prolapse, then you may be worried about the impact of any treatment on your health

By way of background, Dr Arunkalaivanan was a Consultant Urogynaecologist based and employed by the NHS at Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospital. He carried out private work for BMI Healthcare at their Edgbaston Hospital and the Priory Hospital in the West Midlands.

The concerns expressed are that, contrary to accepted medical procedure he continued to use synthetic mesh in surgical procedures to treat and correct pelvic organ prolapse (POP).

The use of synthetic mesh was prohibited by the Trust in January 2009 following advice and  guidance from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) who had concerns over the long-term impact and effectiveness of the procedure. It appears that Dr Arunkalaivanan may have ignored this instruction and continued to carry out the procedure using the synthetic mesh.

So far the trust has invited 191 patients to re-attend and to discuss the treatment however it is possible that the number of potential recalls may grow.

If you have concerns that you may have been treated in this manner or suffer from symptoms that indicate issues with synthetic mesh following such a procedure then you may wish to contact Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust:

The main problems that arise from using synthetic mesh include:

  • post-operative pain and/or irritation
  • recurrent prolapse
  • inability to have sexual relations
  • deterioration of the mesh so that it pushes through the vaginal wall
  • infections or abnormal discharge
  • incontinence

While your health and well being are paramount you may want to obtain legal advice on claiming compensation for any complications or problems arising from this failure to follow standard and recognised procedure within the hospital

If you would like to discuss the matter further so that you can make an informed decision as to the course of action that is best for you then please get in touch with us:

All claims can be dealt with on a ‘no win no fee’ basis so you can get expert legal advice without having to worry that you will ever be out of pocket.
